HOW TO BEAT THE HEAT OF PHOENIX SUMMERS

As Phoenix homeowners, we’re always looking for ways to beat the heat of our sweltering summers. Going outside almost feels like we’re walking through a kiln! Some folks are lucky enough to escape the heat and run to a northern climate. Some of us just have to tough it out. We’ve come up with a few ideas on how to beat the heat of the Phoenix summer, and yes, they do revolve around having a water feature in your yard (shocker).

AVOID THE FIERY DEATH STAR

The first thing Phoenix homeowners learn as they go through their first blazing summer is to avoid going out during the day if at all possible. But we quickly get cabin fever (like snow country does in the winter), so we need some fresh air! If you don’t want to burst into flame, go out in the early morning and at night, and stay indoors in the air conditioning when the fiery death star is searing out desert during the day.

Another option would be to go to a mall, but that might encourage you to spend money on impulse purchases, which can get quickly out of hand! Ask me how I know…

If you want to stay home, but enjoy your yard at night, what do you have for entertainment? How about a lovely lit water garden?

A WATER FEATURE CAN COOL YOUR YARD!

You’ve probably seen those memes about how having trees along a street can drop the temperature 10+ degrees versus just a blank mass of concrete and asphalt. Having a water feature can drop the temperature in your yard over 10 degrees, too, even more if you add terrestrial plantings around it such as trees and shrubs. We’ve had many people walk into our backyard and exclaim how much cooler it is next to our pond.

POOL VERSUS POND

Many Phoenix homeowners have a pool to jump into when the heat is on. Good for you! But how much maintenance goes into that? How much do you spend on a pool service, on chemicals, or how much time do you spend trying to keep that body of water sterilized? You can’t really have trees and plants around it because the leaves plugs up the filter, so lack of shade can be an issue. And that pool deck gets pretty darn hot!

A well-built water garden just begs for plants to surround it, adding to the cooling effect. Shade is super important for dodging the summer heat. You may or may not want to jump into to the pond, but you can certainly dip the tootsies in while holding a cooling refreshing beverage.

These are just a few of our ideas on how to beat the Phoenix summer heat by adding a pond, water garden, or flowing stream to your yard.
